Cigarette butts are the most littered item on earth — more numerous than all other litter combined. They are made of plastic, they are toxic, and they last for decades in the environment.
A single cigarette butt can contaminate up to 1,000 litres of water with heavy metals, nicotine, and carcinogens. Birds, fish and marine mammals ingest them. They block waterways, pollute drinking water, and are now subject to Extended Producer Responsibility legislation across Europe and beyond.
